Space Fuel: The impending question of whether we will have enough?

For the impending question of if we will have enough fuel to go to other planetary bodies for interplanetary colonization, wouldn't we just need enough fuel to reach a certain speed, and then, since there is no air resistance, wouldn't we stay at the same speed (ex. the speed of light) unless slowed down by gravity, or if we slowed the space ship down?
