Why can't I lucid dream?

Lucid dreams are not always fun. I had lucid dreams for a week straight and i always woke up terrified. I dreaded going to sleep because i knew that i was going to have another nightmare so be happy that you cant lucid dream because sometimes they are all theyre cracked up to be.
