Keep dog in whelping area?

I do not leave my dogs in whelp. I am with them 24/7. I'm a wussie-- if they want to give birth on the sofa, my bed, etc., they may, but then the litter gets moved to the whelping box after all is done. An x-pen around the box keeps all in place.
